A Desert Place

parched earth

As we begin this season of Lent, we read, in Mark, that after Jesus' baptism he was sent into the wilderness where he was tested.

12 And the Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. 13 He was in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan; and he was with the wild beasts; and the angels waited on him. (Mark 1:12-13)

While in the desert Satan tempted Jesus to use his God-given power to satisfy and exalt himself (found in Matthew 4:1-11). Jesus refused to relinquish his trust in God. After 40 days Jesus left the wilderness spiritually strong and ready to step into his purpose.

Generations before, the people of Israel were sent into the desert to flee slavery in Egypt. What should have been a short journey lasted 40 years because of their disobedience - their inability to trust God. Although God visibly guided them, supplied food and water, and gave them repeated victory over those who came against them, they were unable to let these amazing provisions enhance their trust.

The Lenten season - the time between Epiphany and Easter - is a time to embrace our own wilderness experiences. The desert places in our lives can cause us to feel parched and desperate. But we can use this time of reflection and self-denial to practice trusting God to satisfy and empower us to fulfill our purpose - living a life that glorifies God.

1 In you, Lord my God,

I put my trust.

2 I trust in you;

do not let me be put to shame,

nor let my enemies triumph over me.

3 No one who hopes in you

will ever be put to shame,

but shame will come on those

who are treacherous without cause.

4 Show me your ways, Lord,

teach me your paths.

5 Guide me in your truth and teach me,

for you are God my Savior,

and my hope is in you all day long. (Psalm 25:1-5)
