Life Laid Down

bridge over raging water

13 Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. (John 15:13)

Certainly Jesus was the full expression of God's love as he laid down his own life so that we could be in right relationship with God. We lay down our own lives every time we put others before ourselves. We are called to speak up and fight for those who are powerless.

8 He has shown you, O mortal, what is good.

And what does the Lord require of you?

To act justly and to love mercy

and to walk humbly with your God. (Micah 6:8)

Those who have gone before us are the bridge we now walk over. The water beneath us is still troubled - injustice is persistent - but their sacrifice began to lay the asphalt on the, once sandy, path that we must continue to pave. The work they started may look firm, but it needs resurfacing. Old ways of thinking and doing have produced deep groves that will require work to truly smooth out, not just cover over. I must be the bridge. You must be the bridge. Each one, a life laid down.

When you're weary, feeling small When tears are in your eyes, I'll dry them all I'm on your side, when times get rough And friends just can't be found Like a bridge over troubled water I will lay me down Like a bridge over troubled water I will lay me down

- (Bridge Over Troubled Water, Simon & Garfunkel)
