God's House

house and dirt in mighty hands

12 When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come forth from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.

(2 Samuel 7:12-13)

During the time of King David, when the ark of the covenant was the place of God's presence, everyone knew where to find God. God's presence was experienced so literally that David wanted to build God a permanent residence - a temple. Although David would come to be known as a "man after God's heart", David would not be the one to build the temple. That honor would go to David's son - Solomon.

This foreshadows Jesus as David's descendant who would fully establish God's kingdom, ushering in the Holy Spirit which ignites God's presence in each of us. We are the body of Christ. We are - individually and collectively - God's house.

This Is The House That God Built

These are the people who sit in the pews

To hear the good news

These are the people who sit in the pews

To hear the good news,

Who put on their shoes

To share all God’s views with those abused

These are the people who sit in the pews

To hear the good news,

Who put on their shoes

To share all God’s views with those abused

Who give of themselves: their time, their treasure

To work together and make God’s world better

These are the people who sit in the pews

To hear the good news,

Who put on their shoes

To share all God’s views with those abused

Who give of themselves: their time, their treasure

To work together and make God’s world better

Till the whole world knows that we all share forever

In this, the house that God built.

17 So he came and proclaimed peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near; 18 for through him both of us have access in one Spirit to the Father. 19 So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are citizens with the saints and also members of the household of God, 20 built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone. 21 In him the whole structure is joined together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord; 22 in whom you also are built together spiritually into a dwelling place for God.

(Ephesians 2:17-22)
