For Such A Time As This

14 "For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father’s family will perish. And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?” (Esther 4:14)

Throughout history the human race has sought to hold different groups down while elevating others. At the time of the book of Esther, the combination of race and religion known as Judaism caused the people of Israel - who were already in exile - to be the target of political hate. It may be debatable rather Esther is an historical figure, or a character of historical fiction, but the courage under fire that she represents is not up for debate. Those following the example of Esther speak truth to power, and use their gifts and advantages to lift up those without power.

In the gospel lesson, Jesus, while holding a small child , says,

42 "If any of you put a stumbling block before one of these little ones who believe in me, it would be better for you if a great millstone were hung around your neck and you were thrown into the sea." (Mark 9:42)

Children, much like the people of Israel throughout history, were a vulnerable group with few rights or protections. Who would Jesus hold in his arms today? The refugee, the homeless, the differently-abled, the person on the other side of the aisle politically. What are we willing to risk to stand up for someone who can not stand up for themselves?

We are each uniquely placed to be a blessing, and have a positive and powerful impact on the world. With courage, we must seek God and work for justice for all for such a time as this.

I and my attendants will fast as you do. When this is done, I will go to the king, even though it is against the law. And if I perish, I perish.” (Esther 4:16b)
