The Blind See
51 Then Jesus said to him, "What do you want me to do for you?" The blind man said to him, "My teacher, let me see again." 52 Jesus said to him, "Go; your faith has made you well." Immediately he regained his sight and followed him on the way. (Mark 10:51-52)
Mark 10, beginning at verse 46, gives us the second story of Jesus healing a blind man. This man, Bartimaeus, calls out to Jesus as soon as he realizes that's who's passing by. Although the others near the scene tell Bartimaeus to be quiet, he continues to call out, and Jesus acknowledges him - but not directly. Jesus tells the same people who were trying to shush the blind man to call him - transforming them from door keepers who guard and block the way, to ushers who welcome. They then eagerly encourage Bartimaeus saying, "Take heart; get up, he is calling you."(v. 49)
Fully expecting to be healed, Bartimaeus throws off his cloak and goes quickly to Jesus. Jesus heals him, and, by faith, Bartimaeus receives the healing.
We are the ones who cry out. We are also the ones who have the potential to block the way, or to welcome. Jesus longs to transform us all into faithful recipients of the abundant life he offers, and joyful, willing participants in the transformation of the world.
By God's grace may it be so.
6 This poor soul cried, and was heard by the LORD, and was saved from every trouble. 7 The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them. 8 O taste and see that the LORD is good; happy are those who take refuge in him. (Psalm 34:6-8)
