Overflowing Grace

fishermen hauling in nets

5 Simon answered, "Master, we have worked all night long but have caught nothing. Yet if you say so, I will let down the nets." 6 When they had done this, they caught so many fish that their nets were beginning to break. (Luke 5:5-6)

After speaking to a crowd, Jesus got into the boat of Simon (who would become Peter). Simon and his crew had just finished fishing and were washing their nets when Jesus instructed them to go out again. It had been a long, unsuccessful day for them, and it took serious faith and obedience for them to agree to go back out to try again. But when they did, the catch was so massive that they had to call the crew of James and John to help haul it in. When Simon saw what was happening, he fell before Jesus in fear and awe - amazed that such grace would be given to someone as unworthy as himself.

When we are obedient to the call of Christ, we can expect our nets to be so full that God's grace overflows through us, to all with whom we come in contact. God isn't waiting for us to be worthy. God waits for us to be willing, obedient, and fully aware of our need for God.

Listen in humility. Respond in faith. Abundance awaits in God's grace.

5 And I said: "Woe is me! I am lost, for I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips; yet my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts!" 6 Then one of the seraphs flew to me, holding a live coal that had been taken from the altar with a pair of tongs. 7 The seraph touched my mouth with it and said: "Now that this has touched your lips, your guilt has departed and your sin is blotted out." 8 Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?" And I said, "Here am I; send me!" (Isaiah 6:5-8)
