No Job Too Small
40 "Whoever welcomes you welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. 41 Whoever welcomes a prophet in the name of a prophet will receive a prophet's reward; and whoever welcomes a righteous person in the name of a righteous person will receive the reward of the righteous; 42 and whoever gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones in the name of a disciple -- truly I tell you, none of these will lose their reward."
(Matthew 10:40-42)
Whenever someone is in any position of leadership there are usually people with less, or no, visibility supporting them and enabling them to lead well. Jesus was no different. Along with the recognized disciples, there were supporters like Mary, Martha, Lazarus and Lydia who provided resources, meals, and shelter. We don't read of any of them performing a miracle or preaching a sermon, but their gifts of service undergirded Jesus' ministry and mission.
Even when we are not the one preaching, traveling for mission trips, marching in the streets for justice, there is support we can give. Encouraging those with broken spirits, sharing a meal with someone who's alone (even virtually), and earnestly praying for those who lead. We are all needed, not necessarily to be front and center, but to be faithful where we are with what we have. Jesus valued his behind-the-scene supporters, and honored even those who shared God's love and grace in the smallest ways.
8 Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. 9 Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. 10 Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. (1 Peter 4:8-10)
