Repent and Be Free

1 At that very time there were some present who told him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. 2 He asked them, "Do you think that because these Galileans suffered in this way they were worse sinners than all other Galileans? 3 No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all perish as they did. 4 Or those eighteen who were killed when the tower of Siloam fell on them--do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others living in Jerusalem? 5 No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all perish just as they did." (Luke 13:1-5)

When people are overwhelmed with difficulties and challenges that seem insurmountable we are often quick to look for a reason that such terrible things are happening. If they have done something to deserve punishment we want to be sure to distance ourselves in hopes that we can avoid their fate. But life is rarely so simple. Sometimes we must live though the consequences of our sin, and sometimes, by God's grace, we are spared. Sometimes the horribleness of life strikes in painfully random ways. Jesus was clear, when speaking in Luke 13, that the tragedies that were on the hearts and minds of those gathered were not a result of any greater sin, but they should serve as a reminder that the wages of sin - all sin - is death. We are called to be repentance people - not only to avoid the consequence of sin, but to live in the full life of freedom here and now. With God's help we can change our mind, our heart, and our actions from the things that do not glorify God, and turn toward the things of God that offer life and freedom.

13 No testing has overtaken you that is not common to everyone. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tested beyond your strength, but with the testing he will also provide the way out so that you may be able to endure it. (1 Corinthians 10:13)
